MBC wins the Lipton Cup!!

MBC has won the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup for the 30th time in club history and the first in 15 years!

With Lake Elmo as the ideal rowing venue site for the 106h Annual NWIRA Championship Regatta, more than 400 athletes competed in 115 races over a two day period in 51 rowing events. It was one of the largest NWIRA championship regatta in recent years.

Despite rain and choppy water conditions in the early part of the competition, the Minneapolis Rowing Club and MBC began their efforts to earn as many points as possible. While Minneapolis and St. Paul battled for the top position for the various aggregate trophies, competitors from Regina, Winnipeg, Rochester, Thunder Bay, Twin City Youth Rowing, Kenora, Milwaukee, Duluth, Quad City, and St. Croix also made their mark in the regatta.

With much improved conditions of sunny skies and calm water on Saturday, the competition between the two rival clubs continued. In the end and after waiting for about a week while the regatta results were verified by the Canadian members of the NWIRA Executive Committee, MBC came out on top by just a few points - MBC earned 630.65 points and Minneapolis earned 626.60.

In addition to winning the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, MBC also won the Junior’s Division, Master Division, and the Women’s Division (Henning Peterson Trophy) by a wide margin. MBC rowers also won 15 events.
